FILMAKER BIO
Methamphetamine is a familiar topic to writer/producer Todd Jarrell. A resident of Cookeville, Tennessee, the primary location for this film and the hub of the Upper Cumberland mountain area, Jarrell watched a meth crisis grow from a few early print stories in the local Herald Citizen to a social issue garnering the attentions of the national press. First reporting on the home made drug in 2004 for Nashville’s WPLN (NPR), Jarrell’s public radio series In Meth’s Grip garnered three national awards and was cited by Public Radio News Directors Inc. as the “most comprehensive, listen-able, and eye-opening coverage of the meth problem we have heard to date.” Following that series, Nashville’s WKRN NEWS 2 (ABC) invited Jarrell to collaborate on exploring Tennessee’s meth problem in a one-hour prime time news special. The ensuing, Meth In Tennessee, was nominated for the 2006 National EMMY in Community Service.
Jarrell’s previous television work includes the PBS feature Tree Safari: A Sculptural Journey, (PBS) filmed in South Africa on the mythic and medicinal aspects of sculptor Brad Sells’ exotic wood medium. Change of Heart, examining one spiritual young man’s work with Cape Town’s street children. Now in production are The Koa Connection, the second of the Tree Safari series and TUBA U: Basso Profundo, which follows an unlikely ensemble to Carnegie Hall.
Jarrell’s audio work includes the award-winning audiobook Slow Dance with the Planet (HighBridge), and features for All Things Considered; Weekend America; The World; The Savvy Traveler; Great Lakes Radio Consortium; CBC Radio One (Canada); Radio Netherlands World Service; andBBC Radio 4. Print/Internet features include: National Geographic News; CNN.com; Hemispheres (USA), Wingspan (Japan), Traditional Boats and Tall Ships (UK), Houston Chronicle, New Orleans’ Times Picayune, andCanada’s national daily The Globe and Mail.
Jarrell’s work has earned recognition from: National & Regional EMMY nominations, Associated Press, AURORA Awards, TELLY Awards, GABRIEL nomination, PRNDI, LOWELL THOMAS Awards, the SILVER MICROPHONE, the COMMUNICATORS Crystal, and more.
